Home to School Transport Compliance Officer
Description
At Bath & North East Somerset Council we have one overriding purpose to improve people’s lives.
Bath & North East Somerset Council serves a unique and vibrant area that blends rich heritage with natural beauty. Home to the iconic city of Bath a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its Roman Baths, Georgian architecture, and cultural vibrancy the district also encompasses stunning rural countryside in and around the Chew Valley, including parts of the Cotswolds and Mendip Hills, both designated National Landscapes. With a strong commitment to sustainability, innovation, and improving people’s lives, the council offers an exceptional environment in which to work.
We’re looking for a Compliance Officer to help keep children and young people safe when travelling to and from school.
In this role, you’ll support the Council’s Home to School Travel service by checking that transport providers meet required safety, safeguarding and contractual standards. Your work will give assurance that drivers, passenger assistants and vehicles are compliant, properly checked and operating in line with regulations.
About the Role
You’ll carry out routine and spot compliance checks, review documentation such as DBS certificates and training records, and undertake inspections of transport providers. You’ll respond to complaints and incidents, help investigate concerns, and play a key role in safeguarding children and young people using council arranged transport. The role also involves maintaining accurate records, producing reports, and helping to deliver safeguarding and health & safety training to providers.
The post is a mix of office based, home working and visits to providers’ premises, schools and other sites etc., so flexibility and the ability to organise your own workload are essential.
About You
We’re looking for someone who is organised, methodical and confident working with rules, processes and evidence. You’ll be comfortable communicating clearly with a wide range of people, including transport providers, drivers, passenger assistants and council colleagues. You’ll be able to work independently, manage competing priorities and apply sound judgement when issues arise.
Experience in a compliance, inspection or assurance role is ideal, and an understanding of safeguarding, health and safety, or passenger transport would be an advantage. Above all, you’ll be committed to keeping people safe, acting with integrity, and upholding the Council’s standards and values.
