About us

We are recruiting for an Environmental Protection Officer to work within the Environmental Protection Team.

The team conducts a variety of work relating to contaminated land, waste/drainage and vermin, air quality, noise, light and planning consultations.

You will work directly alongside the Environmental Protection Officers for contaminated land and public health, reporting to the Principal Officer and the Team Manager.

The role

The role is varied but will focus on contaminated land and public health cases including waste and vermin.

Contaminated Land: You will be required to make consultation responses for planning applications and carry out environmental search requests, as well as undertaking project work associated with Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act, which will involve some use of GIS mapping and specialist software.

Public Health: You will be required to investigate complaints from the public relating to waste accumulation, vermin and drainage. This will involve on site investigations to resolve any issues.

You will also assist and carry out investigations into complaints of light loss due to high hedges and complaints about invasive plant species.

There will be scope to increase skills and provide assistance to other areas within the team including air pollution and noise investigations.

What's needed?

The role is career graded and applications are welcome from newly qualified graduates and those that have relevant experience.

Applicants must be qualified to at least degree level in environmental science, or similar. You should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the subjects and the relevant legislation.

The role requires good communication skills for dealing with stakeholders including Council Departments (e.g. Planning, Estates, Pest Control, Social Services), external agencies (e.g. housing associations, Environment Agency, United Utilities), consultants and the public.

Excellent communication skills and use of IT systems are essential.

All relevant training will be provided to the successful candidate.
