Summary Of Position

We wish to expand the capabilities and impact of our sustainability programs. This includes achieving certifications, developing and implementing new processes, analyzing our current impact in the community, and communicating these efforts and data to stakeholders. The Sustainability Intern is responsible for assisting the Operations Manager, Assistant Director, and Director of Operations with oversight regarding sustainability for events, internal processes, purchasing and inventory impact, education, documentation, and various department related tasks and projects.

While industry standards surrounding sustainability are expanding rapidly, the Baltimore Convention Center seeks to advance our programs and obtain certifications to stand out in our field. We are audited annually for the Event Industry Council Sustainable Event Standards and hope to work towards LEED Certification in future iterations of the building. The BCC is a previous winner of the Maryland Green Registry Sustainability Leadership Role. This role will help lay the foundation for these processes and awards for the future.

Interns are hired with a specific set of tasks or projects in mind, but we also welcome additional projects based on observation, experiences and passion. The goal is to create meaningful job experiences for the student while providing the agency with tangible outcomes that leave lasting impact. The position will work closely with all departments, as well as relevant entities and non-profit partners.

This position is a part of the Operations Department and reports directly to its Assistant Director of Operations. All actions of the Intern must be in accordance with the policies and procedures of the BCC and the City of Baltimore.

Essential Functions

  • Reviews Event Work Orders to assist with the development of custom event waste management plans.
  • Assists with documentation and inventory of donation by diversion program.
  • Confirms completion of tasks and executed waste sustainability plans.
  • Completes location furniture and fixture audits to tag for repair or replacement.
  • Participates in the event production meetings and pre-cons with other Center employees and clients while aiming to find sustainable opportunities within events.
  • Conduct inspections of building daily.
  • Assists with recycling sorting projects.
  • Assists with the creation of customized sustainability pre-event documentation for customers.
  • Develops training and customer educational documents on BCC practices, initiatives, impact.
  • Develop materials required for enhanced communication between departments and team members.
  • Documents, organizes, and updates, Sustainability Standards of Operation.
  • Maintains simple department reports for various projects.
  • Assist with the completion of the Event Industry Council Sustainable Event Standard application and certification.
  • Assist with the completion of other industry sustainability certifications, applications, and profile updates such as the Maryland Green Registry.
  • Shadow and observes all BCC departments and service partners to assist with finding ways that new sustainability practices can be put in place for more sustainable operations.
  • Work with the BCC food service partner to observe, identify and improve food waste diversion efforts that are taking place at the BCC
  • Conduct research on sustainable practices within the event and venue management industry and make recommendations to BCC leadership on areas for improvement
  • Conduct research and outreach related to current and potential donation/community partners for purposes of relationship development, engagement, and marketing efforts to grow donation impact.
  • Take part in BCC Green Team meetings and develop recommendations related to increasing engagement, outlining future projects, and working on projects such as lunch and learns, sustainability tours, etc.
  • Takes part in educational opportunities with other sustainability experts on a local and national level including shadowing and informational interviews with the Office of Sustainability, Department of General Services Energy Division, Sustainability Commission Members, Levy Restaurants, etc.
  • Assists with the development and completion of the BCC annual sustainability report.
  • Work with BCC Facilities and Engineering department to develop customer communication for event specific data analysis pertaining to water and energy consumption.

Education And Experience Requirements

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a 2- or 4-year undergraduate program or pursuing a master’s degree. While not required, a focus of studies surrounding environmental science, sustainability, sustainable food systems, environmental engineering, climate science, environmental health science is preferred.
