Construction Project Assistant (Intern)

Location: Brighton

Salary: £26,437 per annum

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Construction Project Assistant (Intern) on a full-time, fixed-term basis.

Reporting to: Senior Project Manager (UK)

Main purpose of the role: We are seeking an enthusiastic intern studying Architecture or a related built-environment discipline to gain hands-on experience on a live construction project to work with our major projects team. The one year paid internship role provides exposure to design coordination, site operations, HSEQ practices, and project management, helping bridge academic learning with real-world delivery.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

Design and Technical Support

  • Assist in interpreting drawings, specifications, and detent.
  • Support coordination with contractors’ proposals.
  • Contribute to design reviews, buildability assessments, and value-engineering discussions.

Site-Based Experience

  • Attend site progress meetings and assist with monitoring works against programme.
  • Observe quality inspections and understand compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Learn about construction sequencing, materials, and practical build processes.

Project Coordination

  • Prepare reports, mark-ups, presentations, and supporting documentation.
  • Help track/coordinate queries, and approvals.
  • Support coordination sessions and multidisciplinary design reviews.
  • Support liaison with key stakeholders including College staff and local residents.

Administration Support

  • Assist with agendas, minute-taking, document control, and progress documentation.
  • Provide general team support, including scheduling and communication coordination, general administration.

HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environment and Quality)

  • Support a safe, compliant working environment by following site rules and guidance.
  • Attend inductions, toolbox talks, and daily briefings to understand site safety standards.
  • Assist with basic HSEQ documentation such as inspections, checklists.
  • Learn about environmental responsibilities including sustainability practices.
  • Observe activities, inspections, and record-keeping processes.
  • Identify potential hazards and report issues following safe systems of work.
  • Any other reasonable management request.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate will:

  • Be currently studying, or recently graduated from, Architecture, Architectural Technology, Construction Management, or a related built-environment subject (essential).
  • Have an interest in design, construction methods, and project delivery.
  • Hold strong organisation, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Be comfortable with digital tools; CAD/BIM experience beneficial.
  • Be proactive, curious, and committed to learning.
  • Be professional, reliable, and safety-aware.

Hours of Work:

Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm with a 60-minute unpaid lunch break (40 hours per week). This is a fixed-term role for one year, in the first instance.

Remuneration:

A salary of £26,437 per annum will be offered and is in line with the National Living Wage.

Holidays:

23 days, plus bank holidays increasing to 28 days plus bank holidays after 2 years of service.
