Background    ‘Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is an Ethiopian civil society organization registered on September 19, 2019 before the FDRE Civil Societies Organizations Agency in accordance with Proclamation No. 1113/2019. The objectives of the Organization include promotion and protection of human rights by increasing the participation and contribution of lawyers through trainings; supporting lawyers across the nation and help exchange of ideas, information and experience for better protection of human rights and prevalence of human rights; litigating before courts/other relevant organs to ensure protection and promotion of human rights recognized under the FDRE Constitution and other laws; awareness creation for justice organs on international human rights instruments ratified by Ethiopia; providing free or low cost legal services to victims of human rights violation:- particularly disadvantaged communities; influencing the government to enact new laws or amend existing ones to give full protection for human rights; familiarizing the idea of human rights defenders (HRD) among the lawyers etc.  In pursuit of its objectives, LHR has been implementing different projects in collaboration with donors. Currently, with the support of UNODC, LHR is implementing a project entitled “improving access to justice in criminal justice process through legal aid services and capacity building activities in East Shewa and West Arsi Zones of Oromia and Addis Abeba”. The project aims to enhance access to justice for vulnerable population in Ethiopia, particularly at trial stages of criminal proceedings. As part of this initiative, LHR will began to render legal aid services at Shashemene and Adama prison centres to prisoners by lawyers and assistance lawyers during the project period. After project completion, the services will continue through paralegals to ensure its sustainability.   Building on this background, LHR plans to deliver capacity building training for legal aid providers, including lawyers, assistant lawyers, and paralegals, focused on the delivery of legal aid services within prison settings. This training aims to ensure that legal aid personnel’s are adequately equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective justice services to incarcerated individuals.  Accordingly, LHR is seeking a qualified consultant to serve as trainer and deliver this training at Shashemene and Adama.   Objective   The objective of the assignment is to prepare a PowerPoint (PPT) presentation and deliver training on conducting legal aid services in prison settings (legal aid at trial and post-trial stages of criminal proceeding). The training will focus on the Ethiopian Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code, as well as legal principles, ethical standards and skills required to provide effectively legal aid services to prisoners at Shashemene and Adama.  Scope of the Work   The PowerPoint presentation is expected to cover topics on relevant legislations including FDRE Constitution, Criminal Code, Criminal Procedure, prison legislations, court procedures, prisoners right and legal aid service principles, standards and ethics which are essential for legal aid service delivery in prison setting. In addition, the trainer is expected to prepare the PPT based on  other relevant national, international and comparative frameworks on legal aid service delivery in prison settings.   Training Methods   The trainer is expected to design training methods which best suits the target group including case studies/role play, mentoring and discussion sessions, and interactive dialogue.   Expected deliverables and Timeline   The trainer is expected to prepare a PPT presentation and deliver the training to the target groups for one day. The specific deliverables along with timeline will be as follows:  Submission of draft PPT presentation in 10 working days after the g of the contract;  Incorporation of the feedbacks and submission of the final PPT presentation within five working days;  Prepare and analyze pre- and post-training assessments   Deliver a one-day training to lawyers, assistant lawyers and paralegals in Shashemene and Adama, in their respective place at a venue and date to be fixed by LHR.
