Background ‘Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) is an Ethiopian civil society organization registered on September 19, 2019 before the FDRE Civil Societies Organizations Agency in accordance with Proclamation No. 1113/2019. The objectives of the Organization include promotion and protection of human rights by increasing the participation and contribution of lawyers through trainings; supporting lawyers across the nation and help exchange of ideas, information and experience for better protection of human rights and prevalence of human rights; litigating before courts/other relevant organs to ensure protection and promotion of human rights recognized under the FDRE Constitution and other laws; awareness creation for justice organs on international human rights instruments ratified by Ethiopia; providing free or low cost legal services to victims of human rights violation:- particularly disadvantaged communities; influencing the government to enact new laws or amend existing ones to give full protection for human rights; familiarizing the idea of human rights defenders (HRD) among the lawyers etc. To achieve its objectives and ensure access to justice, LHR has been providing legal aid services for prisoners at Shager City, Jimma and Hawassa prison centers. Currently, LHR, by the support of UNODC, is expanding its outreach to Aadma and Shashemene Prison Centers. In addition to legal aid, LHR seeks to contribute to the improvement of conditions of detained persons by strengthening the capacities of prison leadership and officers on the human rights and rights of detained persons. To do so, LHR is looking for a qualified trainer to deliver training for the prison leadership and officers on these topics at Shashemene and Adama. Objectives The objective of the training is to strengthen the capacity of prison leadership and officers in protecting the fundamental rights of detainees, thereby enhancing the fulfilment of human rights of all detainees, including vulnerable groups. Scope of the work The scope of the assignment includes the preparation of a PowerPoint (PPT) presentation on the fundamental rights of detained persons, with particular attention to vulnerable categories of prisoners. The content should cover basic human rights and the fundamental rights of detained persons based on relevant international and national normative frameworks and practices. The trainer is expected to prepare the PPT presentation based on the training manual already developed by LHR, while also incorporating additional topics not covered in the manual, as necessary. In addition, the trainer will deliver training sessions to 60 prison leaders and officers, conducted in two rounds at Shashemene and Adama, with each session lasting two days. The specific dates and venues will be determined by LHR. Training Methods The trainer is expected to design training methods which best suits the target group including case studies, mentoring and discussion sessions, and interactive techniques. Expected deliverables and Timeline The trainer is expected to prepare a PPT presentation and deliver the training to the selected 60 prison leadership and officers for two days at Shashemene and Adama. The specific deliverables along with timeline will be as follows: Submission of draft PPT presentation in 10 working days after the g of the contract; Incorporation of the feedbacks and submission of the final PPT presentation within five working days; Prepare, administer, and analyze pre and post training assessments to evaluate participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and skills before and after the sessions. Deliver a two-day training to prison leadership and officers at Shashemene and Adama, in their respective places at a venue and date to be fixed by LHR.
