Senior Ontologist
Description
Assignment Description
We are seeking a senior Ontologist to design, develop, and maintain ontologies and taxonomies that support structured and consistent knowledge representation across multiple domains. The assignment involves analysing heterogeneous datasets such as JSON files and spreadsheets to assess structure, relevance, and quality as input to semantic modelling. You will take part in decisions regarding the adoption and integration of upper, mid-level, and core ontologies to ensure semantic coherence and reuse. The role includes applying established standards and best practices, reviewing and improving existing models, and safeguarding semantic accuracy. Close collaboration with stakeholders is essential, as is the ability to clearly explain complex concepts, balance different requirements, and work independently with strong attention to detail.
Required Qualifications:
- Practical proficiency with ontology engineering tools, including metaphactory and RDFox
- In-depth understanding of Semantic Web frameworks and standards, including RDF(S), OWL, SKOS, SHACL, and SPARQL
- Solid experience using Git for version control, including standard workflows for collaboration and change management
- A minimum of five years’ hands-on experience working with ontology modelling and semantic technologies
- Working knowledge of semantic serialisation formats such as Turtle (TTL) and JSON-LD
- Proven experience applying inference logic through Datalog or comparable rule-based languages
It is considered a merit if you have previous experience working in a similar role within a large organisation. It is also considered a merit if you hold an advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field with a focus on semantic technologies.
Location requirements: preferably on-site, but open to a remote position for the right candidate.
