Position Focus

The Yale College Dean's Office is seeking a highly motivated and equity-minded professional to support Student Engagement and provide strategic direction for various cultural communities.

In this role, the individual will primarily support Student Engagement, focusing on the intersection of identities that students bring to Yale College. Additionally, the individual will oversee emerging cultural communities and provide support to both undergraduate and graduate students. The director will have special responsibility for programs for first-generation and low-income students and will oversee the work of the assistant director for the Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) Cultural Community.

Key Responsibilities

Show flexibility in responding to unexpected challenges and opportunities, and proactively adjust plans and strategies as needed.

Support First-Generation, Low-Income (FGLI) students and other cultural communities, focusing on identity intersections and intercultural engagement.

Form partnerships and develop programs with various campus cultural centers, including the new MENA Cultural Community program, and the Chaplain's Office.

Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean for Student Engagement to plan and execute institutional priorities.

Assist in planning and executing Student Life and university programs (e.g., Family Weekend, Yale-Harvard Weekend, MLK programming, cultural heritage month programs, Yale SafetyNet).

Oversee and participate in student programs, advising student organizations and serving on committees.

Work with administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to support and develop the MENA Cultural Community's identity and services.

Collaborate with undergraduate admissions and first-year affairs on student integration.

Foster intergroup dialogue and enhance intercultural interactions with other campus organizations and the local community.

Oversee Yale Safety-Net emergency funding.

Develop and maintain communications materials (newsletters, websites, social media).

Provide project support to divisional leaders and develop external networks.

Partner with university programs supporting FGLI students and diverse student identities, advising relevant student organizations.

Support emerging student communities and handle both confidential and non-confidential materials.

Perform other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual committed to fostering an inclusive community and advancing intercultural engagement. This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as experience in program development and community partnership building.

Essential Duties

Required Education And Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1

Excellent communication and analytical skills (oral and written). Ability to work a schedule that is flexible and includes evenings and occasional weekends.

Required Skill/Ability 2

Proven ability to work independently as well as a committee member and a member of teams. Strong interpersonal and group facilitation skills. Strong leadership skills and the ability to create and lead teams effectively.

Required Skill/Ability 3

Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, alumni, senior administrators, staff, and faculty. Demonstrated ability to supervise a staff of professionals, graduate students and undergraduate students.

Required Skill/Ability 4

Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities and environments, while maintaining a high level of efficiency and effectiveness. Ability to work successfully in a fast-paced environment and proven organizational skills to manage multiple projects. Budgeting, project management, and strategic planning skills are a must.

Required Skill/Ability 5

Knowledge of student development and best practices in student life. Appreciation and respect for principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Ability to engage with diverse individuals (age, gender, nationality, race/ethnicity, profession, sexual orientation, etc.).

Preferred Education, Experience And Skills

Master's degree in a related field and at least 4 years of experience in academic administration or management. Proven experience in working with students, faculty, academic administrators and alumni and community groups. Knowledgeable about issues in various cultural communities and committed to translating these into a local academic context.
