The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) implements a large Capital Plan, which was recently increased to add over $1.6B of transformative new transportation and urban design projects. The Highways Section within CDOT’s Division of Engineering works to ensure these projects use community engagement, context sensitive design, and engineering best practices to create streets and public places that are well-designed, well-constructed, and reflective of the unique character of Chicago’s diverse neighborho

  • DUTIESOversee consultants responsible for the design of local, state, and federally funded transportation infrastructure and urban design pro
  • jects.Reviews concept plans, construction documents, specifications, cost estimates and engineering calculations for projects prepared by staff and consultants to ensure compliance with standard policies, procedures, codes, guidelines; established design criteria; and constructab
  • ility.Develops transportation and urban design policies, guidelines, best management practices, standard operating procedures, review and submittal checklists, specifications, and de
  • tails.Assists staff in resolving complex engineering design and construction pro
  • blems.Prepares engineering designs, drawings, calculations, specifications and cost estimates for infrastructure, construction, maintenance, and repair pro
  • jects.Visits construction sites to monitor status of pro
  • jects.Research new materials, techniques, and software for use in engineering pro
  • jects.Coordinates with City departments, sister agencies, state and federal agencies, community groups, and the public on pro
  • jects.Coordinates projects with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and other regulatory age
