This role description defines the key responsibilities, skills, and expectations for the Resident Engineer position. It serves as a reference for recruitment, onboarding, and performance alignment between the employee, the customer.
1.2 Short description of role
The Resident Engineer acts as the on-site technical interface between the customer and the internal development teams. They support software-related topics on the electric drive system, including issue handling, initial fault tracing, and calibration activities directly on customer vehicles and test objects. Using diagnostic and Vector tools, they secure clear feedback from the field to the development team and help ensure smooth integration of the EDU/inverter into the customer’s vehicle.
**2. Resident Engineer
- Key Skills & Competencies
2.1 Customer Interface & Communication**
- Act as the primary technical contact between the customer and internal SW development teams.
- Collect, clarify, and document customer issues, requirements, and change requests in a structured way.
- Present analysis results, status updates, and proposed solutions to customer engineers and project managers.
- Manage expectations and priorities with the customer, escalating risks and blocking issues early.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English (Additionally, German language skills a +).
2.2 Software Support & Issue Handling
- Support the internal SW development team by providing clear and reproducible issue descriptions, logs, and test data from customer vehicles/test benches.
- Perform initial fault tracing on vehicle or test object (e.g., inverter, EDU test bench) using relevant tools and logs.
- Classify issues (SW / HW / calibration / environment / usage) and perform first-level root cause indication.
- Verify SW fixes and calibrations in the vehicle or on the customer test environment before returning feedback to the development team.
2.3 Testing, Reproduction & Diagnostics
- Reproduce customer-reported issues in:
- Customer vehicles
- Customer test benches / HiL / dyno where available
- Prepare and execute dedicated test cases to validate bug fixes or new features.
- Capture and analyze measurement data (signals, parameters, error codes, communication traces).
- Use OEM and in-house diagnostic specifications to interpret DTCs, freeze frames, and diagnostic logs.
2.4 Calibration & Vehicle Fine-Tuning
- Fine-tune calibrations directly in the customer vehicles in real driving or test-track conditions, according to agreed test plans.
- Ensure traceability and version control of all calibration changes (before/after comparison, storage of datasets, proper naming).
- Support the customer during vehicle build phases, test drives, and validation campaigns by providing on-site calibration adjustments within defined limits.
2.5 Electric Drive Systems & High Voltage Basics
- Base knowledge of electric drive systems (inverter, e-motor, DC link, HV battery, control unit, torque and speed control).
- Understanding of high-voltage systems in vehicles (HV safety concepts, interlock, insulation monitoring, contactor logic
- at least on basic level).
- Basic knowledge of motor control principles (field-oriented control, torque control, speed control, inverter switching) sufficient for fault tracing and meaningful communication with internal experts.
- Ability to interpret key e-drive signals (currents, voltages, torque, speeds, temperatures) during measurements and diagnose abnormal behavior.
2.6 Tools & Measurement Competence
- Confident use of Vector tools, in particular:
- CANape
- measurement, calibration (XCP/CCP), online parameter tuning, data logging.
- CANoe / CANalyzer
- bus monitoring, simulation, recording, and analysis of CAN / CAN FD / LIN
- Experience with DTS 9 / Monaco (or similar diagnostic tools) to:
- Flash ECUs
- Read/clear DTCs and live data
- Execute diagnostic routines and ECU tests
- Ability to create and maintain measurement and diagnostic configurations, signal lists, and workspaces for efficient daily use.
2.7 Methodology & Way of Working
Structured and analytical approach to problem solving with clear documentation of steps taken, observations, and conclusions.
Familiarity with ticketing/issue tracking tools (Jira) to create and track issues with correct details and priorities.
Ability to work independently on the customer site, while staying aligned with remote development teams.
Willingness to work hands-on in/around vehicles and test benches (within safety rules and procedures).
T1 Driving license is preferred
Truck driving license (Medium duty vehicle) is preferred
