The opportunity

  • Support the development, delivery and evaluation of nutrition and dietary policy in Northern Ireland, with a particular focus on the out-of-home sector (including cafes, restaurants, fast food outlets and takeaways).
  • Support policy development and delivery, ensuring approaches are evidence-based, proportionate and effective, taking account of the post-EU exit context.
  • Support the delivery and evaluation of a voluntary calorie labelling scheme, including provision and promotion of a menu calorie labelling tool, alongside wider engagement with the food industry to support healthier food environments.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Support the development, delivery and evaluation of nutrition and dietary policy in Northern Ireland, taking account of the post-EU exit environment and drawing on complex evidence from multiple sources.
  • Support delivery and evaluation of a voluntary calorie labelling scheme, including provision and use of a menu calorie labelling tool.
  • Support engagement with the food industry to progress objectives relating to healthier food provision and nutrition.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings with key stakeholders, including other government departments, food industry representatives, district councils, Invest NI, local colleges and universities, the Public Health Agency and Safefood.
  • Remain alert to emerging UK nutrition and dietary research, supporting engagement with UK government departments and devolved administrations to inform Northern Ireland policy positions.
  • In partnership with policy leads, produce business cases to secure funding for nutrition initiatives and complete Post Project Reviews to evaluate outcomes.
  • Contribute to wider organisational priorities through participation in internal and external working groups, delivery of presentations, and support to the organisation of courses, seminars and exhibitions as required.
  • Where necessary, support preparation of submissions and advice to Ministers and relevant committees, respond to Ministerial correspondence, and draft responses to Assembly Questions.

Essential criteria

  • A degree in nutrition or dietetics (e.g. Dietetics, Human Nutrition, Food and Nutrition, Food Quality Safety and Nutrition).
  • A clean driving licence.
  • Proven post-graduate experience of developing and/or implementing food and/or nutrition-related policy, considering the wider policy context and using complex information from multiple sources.
  • Proven post-graduate experience of planning, monitoring and evaluating projects and/or research.
  • Proven experience of working independently and influencing internal and external stakeholders.
