Principal Backend Engineer

We are looking for principal backend engineers to join a product engineering team responsible for building our client’s AI Evaluations Platform.

We are hiring for a fast‑growing European AI scale-up that has quickly gained significant visibility in the market. Their platform is already used by major European enterprise customers to deploy and continuously improve advanced AI-driven solutions.

This role is suited for engineers who are highly proficient in applying AI‑assisted development tools and comfortable working in an AI‑agent‑driven engineering environment.

Responsibilities

• Build scalable backend services and high‑performance APIs
• Design distributed, event‑driven systems for AI agent simulation and evaluation
• Handle data‑intensive workloads and real‑time processing pipelines
• Ensure systems are reliable, observable, and production‑grade
• Shape long‑term architectural direction and technical strategy
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to deliver high‑impact solutions
• Operate with full lifecycle ownership across design, implementation, and operations

Ideal Candidate We are targeting senior engineers with strong backend foundations and hands-on experience using AI tools as part of their daily development workflow. You bring:

• strong experience deg and operating distributed backend systems
• production expertise in Python or TypeScript
• experience with event-driven or streaming architectures (e.g., Kafka, NATS)
• strong capabilities in deg scalable APIs and backend services
• experience operating production systems and handling incidents
• a product-oriented approach and ability to navigate ambiguity
• ability to independently drive technical solutions in a fast-paced environment

Experience with AI platforms, LLM tooling, or data-intensive systems is beneficial — but **practical experience building in an AI‑augmented workflow is essential.

AI-Augmented Engineering Workflow This team operates in a deeply AI-native development environment, where multiple AI agents and tooling support everyday engineering activities.

Experience with AI‑agent‑driven development is required.

Engineers here work with:

• AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Codex)
• AI-driven debugging, investigation, and issue triage
• AI-supported refactoring, test generation, and workflow automation
• AI tools integrated into development, testing, and operational processes

We are looking for engineers who are already fluent in using AI systems to accelerate problem‑solving, improve code quality, and enhance engineering velocity.
