Organizatio n: The VegeSeed Project, Good Neighbors Uganda Duty Station: NaCRRI Namulonge Other : NSCS Kawanda, MuZARDI(Mukono and Bowa-Luwero), relevant project sites About US: The Uganda Seed Value Chain Capacity Building for Key Vegetable Crops (hereinafter “The VegeSeed Project), which is a bilateral project between Korea and Uganda, is funded by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The Project will be implemented for 9 years (’21-’29) Purpose of the Position: The Field Manager serves as the primary technical and operational lead for all on-site activities within the Uganda Seed Value Chain Capacity Building Project. The central purpose of this position is to bridge the gap between high-level project strategy and ground-level execution. The Field Manager ensures that the breeding programs, infrastructure management (irrigation, greenhouses), and farmer training sessions for the five target crops (Tomato, Chili, Onion, Nakati, Pumpkin) are implemented on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with KOICA’s quality standards. This role is critical in maintaining strong relationships with local stakeholders, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) under the NARO, and the target farming communities to ensure the sustainability of the seed value chain. Key Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for tasks related to vegeseed breeding in four project sites. Especially centered around NaCRRI, MuZARDI, and NSCS, it covers the Mukono and Luwero regions. Liaise with project beneficiaries to view project outputs and beneficiaries, to ensure that progress is made in the achievement of project objectives. Develop a new vegetable variety targeting 5 crops like Nakati, Tomato, Onion, Pumpkin, and Chili pepper. Coordinate and communicate the tasks regarding new variety development among the breeders who belong to NARO, NaCRRI, MuZARDI, and NSCS. Monitor the progress in all the breeding work under the Project. Provide training on seed Multiplication, distribution of certified seeds to farmers, and crop production increase, focusing on the five vegetable crops that have been bred. Crop Monitoring: Regularly inspect crops for signs of pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, and other issues that could affect plant health and yield. Planting and Harvesting: Assist in planting and harvesting operations, ensuring proper spacing, depth, and timing for optimal crop growth and yield. Irrigation Management: Monitor and manage irrigation systems to ensure crops receive the appropriate amount of water. Adjust irrigation schedules and methods based on weather conditions and crop needs. Pest and Disease Control: Implement pest and disease control measures, which may include applying pesticides, setting traps, or implementing integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
