Description
The Head of Carbon is Kijani Forestry’s organizational owner of all carbon strategy, certification, MRV, modeling, and delivery. This role is accountable for ensuring that every carbon credit generated across Kijani’s Forestry Restoration, and Biochar models is credible, compliant, verifiable, and commercially bankable.This position bridges field operations, data systems, certification bodies, regulators, and carbonbuyers. The Head of Carbon safeguards technical integrity while actively enabling growth, partnerships, and revenue generation. Carbon Strategy and Market Positioning Own and execute Kijani’s end-to-end carbon strategy across Forestry, Restoration, and Biochar. Define credit pipelines, delivery timelines, and risk mitigation strategies. Align project design with global carbon market trends, buyer expectations, and long- term permanence requirements. Represent Kijani in carbon market forums, policy discussions, and regulator engagements in Uganda and internationally. Certification, Compliance & Risk Management Lead all certification processes (Verra, Gold Standard, or equivalent), from PDD development through issuance. Own relationships with VVBs, standard bodies, auditors, and regulators. Ensure compliance with Ugandan carbon regulations, land tenure rules, and international frameworks. Partner with Legal to ensure contracts, land-use agreements, and permanence clauses fully support carbon claims. Act as final internal authority on carbon eligibility, leakage, additionality, and permanence risk. MRV, Modeling & Data Systems Design and oversee robust MRV systems across all carbon models. Own carbon modeling assumptions, baselines, growth curves, SOC inputs, and uncertainty management. Drive adoption of digital MRV (dMRV) tools, GIS systems, and field-to-registry data pipelines. Ensure audit readiness at all times, with clean documentation trails from field to issuance. Define and track carbon KPIs (e.g.,hectares verified, survival rates, SOC change, biochar tonnage, credits issued). Field Integration & SOP Governance Ensure field SOPs (planting density, thinning, survival checks, firebreaks, biochar feedstock handling) are carbon-compliant by design. Embed carbon requirements into Ops, MEL, and farmer-facing training systems. Ensure that “what happens in the field” exactly matches “what is documented and verified.” Build carbon literacy across Nursery Hub, Restoration, and Biochar teams. Commercial & Partnership Enablement Act as Kijani’s technical authority in buyer, investor, and partner conversations. Provide models, documentation, and verification logic for carbon sales and due diligence. Work closely with the Chief Growth Officer on proposals, pricing logic, and delivery schedules. Support exploration of new methodologies and credit types. Team Leadership & Capacity Building Build and manage Kijani’s Carbon function. Set clear roles, deliverables, and career progression within the carbon team. Mentor internal staff and raise carbon
